Gas Appliances Need Checking, Now’s the Time
Winter’s on the way, so the rush is on to service your gas appliances before you need to crank them up. We can give all your gas appliances a fully certified service to keep them, and your whānau, safe this winter.
Master Plumbers recommends getting your gas appliances serviced every year and we couldn’t agree more. When it’s in good working order, gas is great. It’s efficient, instant, super-cozy and more cost-effective than electricity. If there’s a power cut, which is a higher risk in winter, you can still use your gas to cook and heat water. No wonder half a million Kiwis go with gas.
Got Gas? We Service It All
However you use gas: fireplace, oven, cooktop and hob, hot water system, central and radiator heating, outdoor kitchen, boiler, underfloor heating or LPG appliances, we can give it the service it needs for optimal performance and safety.
What Gas Do I Have?
If Natural Gas is piped into your home, you’ll see the two charges on your bill, which is usually a daily fixed charge to cover the cost of supplying gas to your home. Then a variable charge based on how much gas you use each month.
If you have LPG, your gas company will either supply it in large 45kg bottles which you order refills when needed for around $150 + gst per bottle, or maybe you fill up your own smaller 9kg bottles if you have low usage.
Both LPG and Natural Gas appliances need servicing regularly.
Servicing Requires a Professional!
If you’re thinking of doing this yourself, here’s a word of advice: DON’T! By law, a professional gasfitter must carry out all gas appliance servicing. If you’re wondering about the cost, a well-serviced gas appliance will run more efficiently, saving you money. Besides, it’s a small price to pay for your family’s safety.
At Jarvis we are registered, and also certifying gasfitters, which is the highest qualification available.
Every time we work on any gas appliance in your home we must gas test and safely certify the whole gas network. This certificate can only be issued by a certifying gasfitter after testing all appliances and gas lines in your home for leaks. A gas certificate is only valid for 12 months - hence the need to get your appliances serviced once a year. Keep your gasfitting certificate somewhere safe, because you may need to provide it if you sell the property, reconnect LPG gas bottles or for insurance purposes. We will also keep your gas safety certificate on file for at least 7 years.
What Happens In a Service?
A service includes a full clean of the appliance and visual inspection of all parts. If we do need to replace a faulty part we will run the cost by the customer first, to be sure we have the go ahead.
The parts most likely to be replaced are regulators, thermocouples, ignitions, pilot assemblies or flame rods.
We check everything is burning at the correct pressures and input for the appliances and check all ignitions. We will then gas test the whole line to check for any leaks and make sure all pressures are correct.
There comes a time in the life of a gas appliance — especially fires and heaters — where the cost of repair is no longer economical. If this is the case, we will discuss with you and provide a price for any appliances we think would suit your needs.
We can now offer options for all fuels for your heating needs: gas, electric and wood-fired options. In the near future, we’ll be able to advise on bio fuel and fuels like Hydrogen / NG mixed.
